FIREARM  & AMMUNITION
DETECTION SERVICES

FIREARM DETECTION SERVICES

The growing concern of firearm-related incidents and current climate makes firearm detection an invaluable skill for our K-9 teams. Our specialized training curriculum emphasizes recognizing the distinct odors of firearms and ammunition, ensuring timely detection and intervention. The training also simulates various environments, from public spaces to private premises, where concealed weapons might pose threats.

Concealed Firearm Detection

This involves identifying firearms that are hidden on a person, such as in clothing or inside bags. The K9s are trained to detect the specific scent of firearms even when it’s masked by body odors, perfumes, or other strong scents.

Stashed Firearm Detection
Firearms that have been hidden or buried in areas like buildings, vehicles, or open fields fall under this category. K9s can pinpoint the location of these stashed weapons with remarkable accuracy, often in places that might be overlooked by human investigators.

Residual Scent Detection
Even after a firearm has been removed from a location, it can leave behind a residual scent. K9 units can detect this residual odor, which can be crucial in investigations to confirm that a firearm was present at a scene, even if it’s no longer there.

Ammunition Detection
Apart from the firearms themselves, K9s are also trained to detect various types of ammunition. This is especially important as ammunition, if not stored properly, can pose its own set of risks.

Detection in Crowded Environments
In places like concerts, sporting events, or public transport hubs, K9s are trained to work amidst distractions and large crowds. They can efficiently screen individuals or areas without causing disruptions, making them invaluable for ensuring public safety in densely populated settings.

Firearm Components Detection
Sometimes, to avoid detection, individuals might disassemble firearms and transport or stash the components separately. K9s trained in firearm detection can identify individual firearm components, ensuring that even disassembled weapons don’t go unnoticed.

Additional Notes on Firearms Detection
In all these scenarios, the speed and accuracy of K9 units in detecting firearms can often mean the difference between a safe environment and a dangerous situation. The presence of these dogs also acts as a deterrent, signaling to potential wrongdoers that security measures are in place. At UPK-9, our commitment to excellence is unwavering. From rigorous validations to multifaceted training programs, every aspect of our operations is designed to uphold the highest standards of safety and proficiency. Every dog has a unique qualification pattern with protocols that may vary from dog to dog and may encompass a smaller or larger range of protocals than indicated above. We pride ourselves on being a frontline defense against narcotics, firearms, and explosive threats, and our track record stands as a testament to our dedication and expertise. EXPLOSIVE
DETECTION SERVICES

EXPLOSIVE DETECTION SERVICES

Real-world scenarios demand real-world preparation. For this reason, UPK-9 is committed to training using high explosives, ensuring our K-9 units are familiarized with authentic explosives and not merely simulated ones. This pivotal aspect of our training regimen sets us apart and guarantees precision in detection. Moreover, we believe in community collaboration; hence, our teams frequently engage in joint training exercises with local law enforcement agencies or military installations. This strengthens our ties with the community and enhances the collective capability to ensure public safety. K9 explosive detection teams are trained to detect a wide range of explosives based on the volatility and common usage of certain compounds in illicit activities. We train on the 5 families of explosives including the list below:

TNT (Trinitrotoluene)
A standard in military ordnance and one of the most commonly used explosives.

C-4
A type of plastic explosive with a high velocity, often used in military applications.

Dynamite
Comprising nitroglycerin and an absorbent material, it’s widely used for demolition.

Semtex
Another plastic explosive that’s been used in various terrorist attacks due to its potency and relative ease of concealment.

ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil)
A mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, commonly used in industrial explosions.

Black Powder
Often found in firearms and firecrackers.

PETN (Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate)
A powerful explosive found in detonating cords.

RDX (Cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine)
A component of several military explosives, including C-4.

TATP (Triacetone Triperoxide)
Homemade explosives that have been used in various terrorist attacks due to their ability to be made from household chemicals.

HMTD (Hexamethylene Triperoxide Diamine)
Homemade explosives that have been used in various terrorist attacks due to their ability to be made from household chemicals.

Nitroglycerin
Found in dynamite and used medically as a vasodilator.

Additional Notes on Explosives Detection
While these are some of the primary explosives K9 teams are trained to detect, the actual range can be broader based on the specific needs of an agency or environment. It’s also noteworthy that detection dogs are continually trained to adapt to new threats and emerging explosive compounds. NARCOTICS
DETECTION SERVICES

NARCOTICS DETECTION SERVICES

In a world where illicit drugs continually pose threats to our society, UPK-9 understands the importance of precise narcotics detection. Our comprehensive narcotics training curriculum is designed to keep our K-9 teams updated with the latest drug trends. From safely handling real narcotics to scenario-based training replicating real-world situations, our dogs are equipped to detect a wide spectrum of narcotic substances with high accuracy. Distractions, search patterns, and the legal implications of narcotics detection are also integral components of this training, ensuring our dogs and their handlers operate effectively, responsibly, and ethically in every situation.  K9 narcotics detection teams are trained to identify a variety of illicit drugs based on prevalent use, potential harm, and law enforcement priorities. Here are some of the top types of narcotics that K9 teams commonly detect:

Marijuana (Cannabis)
Even though its legal status varies across jurisdictions, marijuana remains a primary target for many narcotics detection teams, especially in regions where it’s still illegal.

Cocaine
Derived from the coca plant, it’s a powerful stimulant and one of the most trafficked illicit drugs in the world.

Heroin
A highly addictive opioid derived from morphine, it’s a primary target due to its potency and the opioid epidemic’s societal impacts.

Methamphetamine
Commonly referred to as “meth,” it’s a potent central nervous system stimulant. Crystal meth is its crystalline form.

Ecstasy/MDMA (Methylenedioxymethamphetamine)
Often associated with rave culture, it acts as both a stimulant and a hallucinogen.

LSD (Lysergic Acid Diethylamide)
A potent hallucinogen that causes altered perceptions and feelings.

PCP (Phencyclidine):
Originally developed as an anesthetic, it’s a dissociative drug known for its mind-altering effects.

Fentanyl
A synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Even a small amount can be lethal, making it a priority for detection.

Crack Cocaine
A smokable form of cocaine, it offers a short, intense high and is particularly addictive.

Oxycodone and other prescription opioids
These are sometimes trafficked illicitly due to their potential for misuse and addiction.

Additional Notes on Narcotics Detection
It’s important to note that the specific drugs a K9 team is trained to detect can vary based on jurisdiction, regional drug trends, and the specific mission of the law enforcement or security agency. Moreover, as new synthetic drugs and drug analogs emerge, K9 units undergo additional training to detect these substances.
