Explosive Detection Dogs in California

UPK9 fields certified explosive detection K9 (EDD) teams for stadiums, arenas, concerts, corporate campuses, schools, and government facilities across California. We are based in Folsom, deploy statewide from Sacramento to the Bay Area to Bakersfield, and our handlers train on real high explosives under a federal DEA license — not pseudo-scents or simulants. What our explosive detection K9 teams find

An EDD team is trained against the explosive families that actually appear in threat incidents, and against the components used to build improvised devices. Our dogs are trained to detect and alert on:

  • Nitrate-based explosives — ammonium nitrate, urea nitrate, and the fertilizer-based mixtures most common in improvised devices
  • Plasticized and military explosives — C-4, Semtex, RDX, PETN, and det cord
  • Peroxide-based homemade explosives — TATP and HMTD, the compounds most often used in attacks on soft targets
  • Commercial and blasting agents — dynamite, TNT, emulsions, and water gels
  • Smokeless and black powder — including pipe bomb and pyrotechnic device precursors
  • Initiators and components — blasting caps, detonators, and timing hardware

Trained on live explosives, under federal license

This is the single most important question to ask any K9 detection vendor, and most cannot answer it well. Many private detection companies train exclusively on pseudo-scent kits because possessing real explosive training aids requires federal licensing and secure storage that they do not have.

UPK9 holds DEA Registration RJ0509414 and trains its detection K9s against authentic explosive material. A dog that has only ever worked a manufactured scent kit is being asked to generalize to a real device on the day it matters most. Ours are not. When you contract a UPK9 EDD team, the odor picture the dog carries was built on the real thing.

Where we deploy EDD teams

Explosive detection is not one service. What a sweep looks like depends entirely on the venue and the threat profile, and we scope each contract accordingly.

  • Stadiums, ballparks, and arenas — pre-event bowl and concourse sweeps, vehicle and bus screening, back-of-house and loading dock clearance, roving coverage during the event
  • Concerts, festivals, and live music — stage and production area sweeps before load-in, perimeter checks, roving teams through the crowd during the show
  • Corporate campuses and press events — executive protection support, board meeting and shareholder meeting sweeps, mailroom and package screening
  • Schools, districts, and universities — bomb threat response, graduation and large-event sweeps, and scheduled clearance of athletic facilities
  • Government facilities — building sweeps, public meeting security, and dignitary visit support
  • Public utility and critical infrastructure — substation, tank farm, and control building clearance
  • Transit and freight — airport landside, rail platform, terminal, and cargo facility sweeps

How a UPK9 bomb sweep works

1. Site assessment. Before the first dog sets foot on your property we walk it, on a video call or in person, at no charge. We identify the search areas that matter, the choke points, the areas the dog cannot clear, and the realistic time the sweep will take.

2. Pre-event clearance. The team systematically works the venue before doors, using a documented search pattern rather than a wander. Cleared areas are then controlled — a sweep of a space you cannot secure afterward has limited value, and we will tell you that directly rather than sell you an empty service.

3. Screening and roving operations. During the event, teams work entry points, vehicle approaches, and roving patterns through the crowd. Our dogs are selected and conditioned for crowd tolerance; a dog that cannot work calmly around families is the wrong tool for a public venue.

4. Written documentation. You receive a sweep record identifying areas searched, times, teams deployed, and any alerts. This matters for your insurer, your governing body, and your own liability posture.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an explosive detection dog cost to hire in California?

Pricing depends on the size of the venue, the number of teams required, the length of the deployment, and whether the work is scheduled or emergency response. Most event contracts are quoted hourly per team with a minimum call-out. Request a quote and we will scope it honestly rather than quoting a number that does not survive contact with your actual site.

How far in advance should I book a bomb sweep?

For scheduled events, two to four weeks gives us the best chance of assigning the right teams. We do accept short-notice and emergency bomb threat response, and California-based teams mean we are hours away rather than a flight away.

How long does a venue sweep take?

A single conference room may take minutes. A full stadium bowl with concourses, back-of-house, and vehicle screening can take several teams a full shift. Detection dogs also require rest cycles — any vendor quoting you continuous coverage from a single dog is describing something that does not work.

Are your dogs safe around crowds and children?

Yes. Our detection K9s are selected for stable temperament and conditioned to work public venues. Detection dogs are not patrol or apprehension dogs; the two roles require different animals and different training, and we do not blur them.

What is the difference between an explosive detection dog and a vapor wake dog?

A traditional EDD searches static objects, rooms, vehicles, and packages. A vapor wake trained dog works the scent trail left behind a moving person, which suits screening crowds in motion at entry points. Different venues need different tools, and we will tell you which one your site actually requires.

Do you work with law enforcement?

Our teams routinely train alongside military and law enforcement handlers, and we coordinate with local agencies on client sites when the situation calls for it. Private detection teams supplement law enforcement; we do not replace them, and any alert on a live device becomes a law enforcement matter immediately.
