Narcotics Detection Dogs in California

UPK9 fields certified narcotics detection K9 (NDD) teams for California schools, workplaces, treatment facilities, property managers, and private clients. We hold a federal DEA registration to possess authentic narcotic training aids, which means our dogs are imprinted on real substances rather than pseudo-scent. Folsom-based, deploying statewide. What our narcotics detection K9 teams find

  • Cannabis and concentrates — flower, edibles, wax, and vape cartridges, where possession violates your policy or the age of the possessor
  • Cocaine and crack cocaine
  • Methamphetamine
  • Heroin and opiates
  • MDMA, ecstasy, and common club drugs
  • Diverted prescription medication — including counterfeit pressed pills

Detection profiles are configurable. A school district and a construction employer often want different target odors, and a treatment facility usually wants something different again. We set the profile to your policy, not to a generic package.

Fentanyl: what we will and will not tell you

Fentanyl is the question every client asks, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing one. Fentanyl presents genuine handler and canine safety considerations, and responsible operators treat detection of it as a specialized capability with specific protocols, not a checkbox added to a standard package. Ask us directly about your situation and we will tell you exactly what our teams are and are not certified to do, and what we recommend instead where a dog is not the right tool. Any vendor who answers this question with an unqualified yes is worth a second look.

Where we deploy narcotics detection teams

  • Schools and districts — randomized locker, common area, parking lot, and bus sweeps as part of a documented deterrence program
  • Universities and student housing
  • Workplaces and construction sites — drug-free workplace enforcement, pre-shift yard and vehicle checks, and post-incident searches
  • Treatment centers and sober living facilities — intake screening and routine room checks that protect residents in recovery
  • Property management and multi-family housing — common areas, storage, and vacant unit turnover
  • Logistics, warehousing, and freight — cargo, trailer, and container screening
  • Private residences — discreet, confidential searches for families with a genuine concern

How UPK9 narcotics sweeps work

1. Free consultation. We establish what you are actually trying to accomplish. Deterrence and interdiction are different goals and they produce different programs. Randomized visible sweeps deter. A single covert search interdicts. Most clients want the first and ask for the second.

2. Policy and legal review. For schools and employers we review your search policy, notice requirements, union agreements where relevant, and documentation standards before we deploy. A search that cannot survive a grievance or a lawsuit creates more risk than it removes.

3. The sweep. Teams work a documented pattern. Handlers do not open bags, search persons, or seize property. We identify; you decide; law enforcement is engaged where appropriate.

4. Written report. Areas searched, times, teams deployed, alerts recorded. Defensible documentation is part of the deliverable.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to bring a drug dog into a school in California?

Schools may generally conduct searches of school property such as lockers and common areas under a reasonable suspicion standard, and many districts run K9 programs under a published policy with advance notice to families. Searches of students themselves are a different matter entirely. We are not attorneys and you should have your district counsel approve the program, but we will build the operation to fit whatever policy your counsel signs off on.

Can an employer use a drug dog on staff vehicles?

It depends on your handbook, your lease or ownership of the lot, any applicable collective bargaining agreement, and the notice you have given. Employers with a clear drug-free workplace policy and posted notice are on far firmer ground than those improvising after an incident. Talk to your employment counsel first; we will work within what they approve.

Does cannabis being legal in California make detection pointless?

No. Legal for adults recreationally is not the same as permitted on your campus, your job site, or in your rental units, and it is not legal for minors. Detection enforces your policy, not the criminal code.

Will the dog alert on residual odor?

It can. A dog may alert on a location where a substance was present but has since been removed. That is a known characteristic of scent detection, not a malfunction, and it is why an alert is investigative information rather than proof. Any vendor claiming their dog never produces a residual alert is overselling.

How much does a narcotics detection dog cost in California?

Recurring contracts price considerably better than one-off call-outs. Cost depends on team count, site size, and frequency. Request a quote and we will scope it against your actual facility.

Can you conduct a search discreetly?

Yes. For private residences and sensitive workplace matters we deploy in unmarked vehicles and plain dress. Confidentiality is standard on every contract.
