UPK9 fields certified firearm detection K9 (FDD) teams for California schools, districts, stadiums, corporate campuses, and government facilities. Our dogs are trained on the odor of firearms, ammunition, and gun components — including disassembled weapons and loose rounds. We are based in Folsom and deploy statewide. What a firearm detection K9 actually detects
Firearm detection is frequently misunderstood. The dog is not trained to the shape of a gun; it is trained to the odor signature of the materials involved. That distinction is what makes the capability useful.
- Smokeless powder and black powder — the propellant present in loaded ammunition
- Spent and unspent ammunition — including a single loose round in a backpack or glove box
- Cleaning solvents and gun oils — residues that persist on a weapon long after it has been fired
- Firearm components — frames, slides, barrels, and magazines, including weapons that have been broken down to defeat visual detection
- Cartridge casings and residue — on hands, clothing, vehicles, and storage containers
Because the alert is odor-based, a firearm that has been disassembled and distributed across a bag, a locker, or a vehicle is still detectable. A metal detector sees a shape at a fixed choke point. A dog works the whole environment.
Firearm detection dogs in schools
School districts are the fastest-growing use of this capability in California, and it is the application we get asked about most. Handled correctly, an FDD program is a deterrent first and a search tool second.
- Scheduled and randomized campus sweeps — lockers, common areas, parking lots, and athletic facilities
- Event screening — football games, graduations, dances, and assemblies
- Bus and transportation checks
- Threat response — when a credible report requires a campus to be cleared quickly
Our dogs are selected for temperament around children. Detection K9s are not apprehension dogs, and a school campus is not the place for one. We will also work with your administration on search policy and Fourth Amendment considerations before the first sweep, because a program that is not legally defensible is not worth running.
Other environments we cover
- Stadiums, arenas, and ballparks — entry screening and roving crowd coverage where weapons interdiction is the primary concern
- Concerts and festivals — gate support alongside magnetometers and bag check
- Corporate campuses — workplace violence prevention, terminations, and threat-of-the-week response
- Government buildings and public meetings
- Healthcare facilities — emergency department and behavioral health entrances
- Transit hubs and freight terminals
How UPK9 firearm detection deployments work
1. Free site assessment. We walk the property with you, in person or by video, and identify where a dog adds value and where it does not. If a magnetometer would serve you better at a given gate, we will say so.
2. Policy and legal alignment. For schools and workplaces we review your search policy, consent posture, and documentation requirements before deployment.
3. Deployment. Teams work a documented search pattern. Handlers are trained to manage an alert professionally, discreetly, and without escalating a situation in front of students, staff, or guests.
4. Documentation. You receive a written record of areas searched, times, teams, and alerts.

Frequently asked questions
Can a dog really detect a gun that has never been fired?
Yes. A loaded firearm carries the odor of smokeless powder from the ammunition itself, and a new weapon carries manufacturing oils and packaging residue. A dog trained across those odor profiles does not need the weapon to have been fired.
Can firearm detection dogs work while students or guests are present?
They can, and often that is the point — a visible team at an entrance is a deterrent. For locker and vehicle sweeps most districts prefer to work during class time or after hours to minimize disruption. We will build the schedule around your operational reality.
What happens when the dog alerts?
The handler notifies your designated point of contact. UPK9 handlers do not search students, do not open personal property, and do not detain anyone. The alert is information; the response is yours, and law enforcement is engaged where appropriate.
How much does a firearm detection dog cost in California?
Pricing depends on team count, sweep frequency, and contract length. Districts on a recurring schedule pay meaningfully less per visit than one-off call-outs. Request a quote and we will scope it against your actual campus.
Do you offer firearm and narcotics detection from the same dog?
Some dogs are cross-trained, but there are real trade-offs in accuracy and in how an alert is interpreted. For most school programs we recommend deciding which problem you are actually solving. We will walk you through that honestly rather than upselling a dual-purpose dog you do not need.
How quickly can you respond to a threat?
We are a California company with California-based teams. For most of the state we are hours away, not a flight away.
