Where unarmed officers do the most good
For most sites, an unarmed officer is the correct and sufficient answer. Visible presence deters the overwhelming majority of opportunistic activity, and it does so without the liability exposure and cost of an armed post.
- Duty station and lobby posts — visitor management, badge checks, sign-in, and escort
- Access control — gates, loading docks, employee entrances, and contractor check-in
- Construction site security — equipment and materials theft prevention, overnight and weekend coverage
- Commercial and office buildings — after-hours patrol, alarm response, and opening or closing procedures
- Retail and shopping centers — loss prevention support and customer-facing presence
- Multi-family residential and HOA — roving patrol, parking enforcement, and amenity monitoring
- Events — concerts, festivals, sporting events, trade shows, corporate functions, and private parties
- Schools and universities — campus presence, event staffing, and parking control
- Warehouses and logistics — yard control, driver check-in, and trailer seal verification
Fixed post, roving patrol, or event staffing
Fixed duty station. An officer assigned to a specific position for a defined shift. Best where the value is presence, access control, and a consistent point of contact for staff and visitors.
Roving patrol. Scheduled or randomized rounds across a property, with documented checkpoints. Best for larger sites, storage yards, and multi-building campuses where a single fixed post cannot cover the ground.
Event staffing. Scalable teams for one-off or recurring events, covering entry screening support, wristband and credential checks, crowd flow, and back-of-house access control.
Licensing and compliance
- PPO #121776 — California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services Private Patrol Operator license
- BSIS Guard Card current on every officer, with required continuing training maintained
- Background screening and drug testing on every officer
- General liability and workers compensation insurance — certificates provided before deployment, with your entity named as additional insured on request
- Written post orders for every assignment, so the officer knows exactly what is expected and you have documentation if an incident occurs
- Joint training with partner organizations at both the local law enforcement and federal level — our people train with the people who set the standard
How we run a post
1. Free site assessment. We walk your property with you, in person or by video, and scope the coverage that actually addresses your exposure — not the largest contract we could sell you.
2. Post orders. Site-specific written instructions: patrol routes, checkpoint schedule, escalation thresholds, reporting chain, and emergency contacts.
3. Consistent officer assignment. We assign the same officers to a site wherever possible. An officer who knows your building and your people notices what is out of place. A rotating stranger does not.
4. Supervision and documented reporting. Field supervisor checks, shift reports, and incident reports delivered to your point of contact.
Adding K9 or armed coverage
Many clients run unarmed officers as the standing posture and add capability as the situation requires: an armed officer for a high-risk shift, or a detection K9 team for an event sweep. Because we field all of it in-house, that scales up and back down under one contract and one certificate of insurance.

Frequently asked questions
How much do unarmed security guards cost in California?
Rates depend on shift length, total weekly hours, site complexity, and contract term. Continuous coverage prices better per hour than sporadic call-outs, and overnight or weekend-only posts price differently again. Request a quote and we will scope it against your actual site.
What is the difference between armed and unarmed officers?
Beyond the obvious, an unarmed officer observes, deters, documents, and reports. An armed officer is deployed where the threat assessment supports it and carries additional permit, training, and insurance requirements. Most sites are better served unarmed, and we will tell you when that is the case.
Can you cover a single event rather than an ongoing contract?
Yes. We staff one-off events regularly, from small corporate functions to large public venues.
How quickly can you place officers?
Short-notice and emergency coverage is often available depending on region and shift. For a permanent post we prefer enough lead time to assign the right officer rather than whoever is free.
Are your guards licensed and insured?
Yes. Every officer holds a current BSIS Guard Card, and UPK9 carries general liability and workers compensation. Documentation is provided before the first shift.
Do officers wear uniforms?
Standard posts are uniformed, because visible presence is most of the deterrent value. Plainclothes is available where discretion serves you better.
