UPK9 is headquartered in Folsom, twenty-five miles from the state Capitol. Sacramento is not a market we expanded into — it is where our dogs kennel, where our handlers live, and where our vehicles stage. We field certified explosive, firearm, and narcotics detection K9 teams plus BSIS-licensed armed and unarmed officers across Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Yolo, Sutter, and Solano counties. Why hire a Sacramento company for Sacramento work
Search “K9 detection Sacramento” and most of what comes back is national brands with no California operation. They are headquartered out of state, they win the bid, and then they subcontract the work to a California company — frequently to us. The client pays the broker’s margin, and the team that arrives was never the team they hired.
We are twenty-five minutes from downtown. When a district calls at six in the morning with a bomb threat, the difference between a local team and a national brand is measured in hours on the road, not in marketing copy. It also means our handlers know the buildings, know the venue security managers, and have worked this region’s event calendar before.

Services available in the Sacramento region
- Explosive detection K9 teams — pre-event arena and convention sweeps, government building clearance, bomb threat response, graduation and large-assembly sweeps. Our EDD teams train on authentic explosive material under DEA Registration RJ0509414, not pseudo-scent kits.
- Firearm detection K9 teams — school and district campuses, athletic events, corporate sites. Trained on disassembled weapons, ammunition, and powder, not just intact firearms.
- Narcotics detection K9 teams — district locker and vehicle checks, workplace screening, property management, treatment and residential facilities.
- Armed security officers — BSIS guard cards and firearms permits, standing posts and event details across the metro.
- Unarmed security guards — duty stations, access control, construction sites, and events.
- Red team security audits — covert testing of your screening, access control, and staff response, reported with hard data rather than impressions.
The security profile of this region
Sacramento’s threat picture is not generic, and a vendor who treats it that way will scope your job wrong. Inside a fifty-mile radius sit a downtown NBA arena, the state Capitol complex and its surrounding agency buildings, a riverfront ballpark, a 900-acre fairground, two major university campuses, an international airport, one of Northern California’s largest amphitheaters, and more than thirty public school districts. Each carries a different problem.
- Arenas and ballparks — bowl and concourse clearance before doors, vehicle and bus screening, loading dock control, roving coverage through the event.
- State and county government facilities — building sweeps ahead of public meetings and hearings, dignitary visit support, mail and package screening.
- School districts and universities — bomb threat response, firearm and narcotics sweeps, graduation and athletic event coverage, scheduled clearance of athletic facilities.
- Fairgrounds, festivals, and amphitheaters — stage and production sweeps before load-in, perimeter checks, roving teams through large outdoor crowds.
- Corporate and tech campuses — shareholder and board meeting sweeps, executive protection support, mailroom screening.
- Distribution, utility, and critical infrastructure — substation, tank farm, control building, and warehouse clearance.
- Airport landside and transit — terminal, platform, and cargo facility sweeps.

Who our handlers train with
Detection work degrades quietly. A dog that is never tested against unfamiliar problems in unfamiliar buildings will still look confident on the leash and still miss things. That is why our handlers train with outside agencies rather than only in our own kennel — and most of those agencies are in our backyard.
- 60th Military Working Dog Squadron, Beale AFB
- Travis Air Force Base
- California Highway Patrol canine handlers
- Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)
- United States Coast Guard, Alameda
These are joint training relationships. No agency named here sponsors, certifies, endorses, or recommends UPK9. We train alongside their handlers, and we hold our teams to the standard that sets.

Frequently asked questions
How fast can you get a K9 team to a site in Sacramento?
Our teams stage out of Folsom, so most of the Sacramento metro is a short drive rather than a flight. We accept scheduled work and short-notice or emergency response. For planned events, two to four weeks gives us the best chance of assigning the right teams; for a threat in progress, call and we will tell you honestly what we can have on site and when.
Do you work with Sacramento-area school districts?
Yes. Firearm and narcotics sweeps, bomb threat response, and event coverage are routine district work for us. Our school-facing K9s are Labrador Retrievers and German Shorthaired Pointers — floppy-eared, stable-tempered breeds that read as approachable to students and parents. A detection dog on a campus should not look like a patrol dog, because it is not one.
Can you sweep state and county government buildings?
Yes. Public meeting and hearing security, building clearance, and dignitary visit support are all within scope. Government facilities usually require documentation of the sweep — areas searched, times, teams deployed, alerts — and you receive that record as a matter of course.
Do you cover Roseville, Rocklin, Elk Grove, and Davis?
Yes. The full list of cities is above; if your site is not on it, call. We deploy statewide and regularly work outside the immediate metro.
What does a Sacramento bomb sweep or drug dog visit cost?
It depends on the size of the site, how many teams it needs, how long the deployment runs, and whether it is scheduled or emergency response. Most contracts are quoted hourly per team with a minimum call-out. We will walk your site first, at no charge, and scope it honestly rather than quote a number that does not survive contact with the actual building.
Are your dogs safe around crowds and children?
Yes. Our detection K9s are selected for stable temperament and conditioned to work public venues. Detection dogs are not patrol or apprehension dogs; the two roles need different animals and different training, and we do not blur them.
Are you licensed in California?
Yes — California Private Patrol Operator license PPO #121776, issued by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, plus DEA Registration RJ0509414 for training aids. Ask any vendor for both numbers before you sign.
